Dear Nigerian-American parent,
Welcome to this monthly newsletter for disseminating information
about the formal education of our young children in public
schools in the United States of America. As children in
Nigeria we grew up knowing we were the hope of not only
our parents but the hope of our families and communities.
This is the knowledge that gives us the drive and inner
motivation that so characterizes Nigerians everywhere, no
matter our language or our religion. Even as Nigeria experiences
this difficult period in its history, it is our collective
determination, ingenuity and endurance that allow us to
survive and to transcend all difficulties. We must instill
these values within our children. Those who are sensitive
to the world around them are often sensible.
We know now, more than ever the value of formal education
and we must embrace all that will keep our hope, our children,
eternal. This forum hopes to provide Nigerian-American parents
information about the nuts and bolts of formally educating
our children in the United States while allowing them to
maintain a well-defined sense of self and culture.
The education system in the United States is both complex
and broad. Details of enrolling a child in school often
varies from state to state and from county to county. There
are numerous guidelines and policies. The "jargon"
or language used in education circles also makes the education
process appear even more complex than it already is. In
order to ensure that your child receives a quality education,
it imperative to know how to access information and how
to use this information to guide you and your child through
the education system.
